Before we build our waka, we need to "see it" in our project, just like we would "see it" in the rākau (tree).
We'll do this by downloading and saving an outline of a waka to our device, then uploading to Scratch. This will be our guide for placing the parts of the waka.
Watch the video or follow the written instructions below.
Download the waka outline:
Right-click on the waka outline above
(click the right button on your mouse, or click the right side of your trackpad, or tap and hold on a tablet)
Select "Save image as... " then click Save
The image will be saved to your Downloads folder or Camera Roll
Upload the waka outline to Scratch:
Next, we upload the waka outline from our device to Scratch!
In Scratch, images like this are called sprites.
Sprites are characters or other objects which appear on the stage.
Hover your mouse over the Sprite Cat icon (or tap on tablet) to show the options.
Click on the top Upload Sprite option
Find and select the waka outline you downloaded
Click Open
Now we can resize and re-position the waka outline to fit on the stage.
To re-position the waka outline, simply drag it around the stage! (hint: you have to drag the red part!)
Resize your waka outline
Click on the waka outline in the Sprites area
Click on Size, in the box above the outline
Delete the number 100, using your keyboard
Type in a smaller number, like 90, and press Enter on your keyboard
Awesome work! Now we've got the design, let's carve out the hiwi (hull)!
